Discussion Questions

•Why does Luce want to go to the lake and dunes?

(Possible answers include because school is out, Luce likes to

swim, and Luce likes to be with Bruce and Sue.)

•Where do you like to go when school is out? What do you have

to do to get ready to go?

•What do you like to do in your own neighborhood when

school is out?

Exploring the Story

•

Talk about the words June, Luce, and tune. Write them so you

can see how they are spelled. Discuss how the letter u in these

words has the long sound heard at the beginning of the word use.

Notice how all the words have a silent e at the end. Find other

words in the story with the same pattern, including words that end

in the letter s, such as cubes, cute, dunes, tubes, and tunes. (Note

that there are slight differences in the sound of long u in words

such as tune and cute.)

•

Write the following words on sheets of paper and place them in a

box or bag: cub, cube, cut, cute, dud, dude, dun, dune, hug, huge,

jut, jute, run, rune, tub, tube, us, and use. Draw one and read the

word aloud. Tell whether the word has the short or the long u

sound. After all the words are read, match the cards (for example,

cut with cute) and discuss how the letter e affects the vowel

sound.

•

Wash your hands. Roll some frozen dough to roll into a U shape.

Brush with egg whites, sprinkle with a cinnamon-sugar mixture,

and place on greased cookie sheets. Bake 20 minutes in a

350-degree oven.
